No Sweets for Me

Last week I got some terrible news. For those of you that know me you know how devastating this news was for me...considering my addiction to anything sugar. After the dreaded glucose tolerance test, I was told that I have GDM. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. DURING THE HOLIDAYS!! Oh well. I've actually been really good at restraining myself. Of course, I'm glad I found out because I want to have a healthy baby. My MD is having me take a three hour class this week and then I have to test my blood sugar four times a day for a week so they can see when it's the highest. Then, they'll give me medication to try and keep my sugars down. If any of you have gone through this or have any suggestions, let me know! I will for sure need it...this Wednesday I'm spending all day making chocolates. SELF CONTROL!!

I'm so sorry! I do have a few pointers, though, since I'm married to a diabetic. I'm sure you'll learn them in your class, but I'll share anyway:

Don't drink juices, soda, etc. (anything that is sweetened or has natural sugar).

Protein will stabilize your blood-glucose levels, so it is always a good thing to have. Eggs, meat, peanut butter...

Good luck! You can do it.

I'm so sorry to hear that! This may be a blessing in diguise, because now you will have to be good, which will be very beneficial to the baby. Just beware, it will probably be a large baby.

Oh Ashley, I'm sorry. Seriously, I know it's such a pain to have to deal with. I think I spend at least an hour a day just think about sweets. I found out about my GD right before Halloween, so I have now suffered through two big holidays with one more on the way (I'm hoping I get to eat some sweets on New's Years--we'll have to see if she's here yet). Like you say, it's easier to have self-control when you know it's good for the baby. And honestly, I have felt much better since I started avoiding sugars. My round-ligament pain let up, my weight gain slowed down, and my body has just felt better in general. I'm getting sick of eating the same things everyday though, I miss sugar! Good luck.

Sorry Ash! I know you were dreading that! You will have to tell me how to find all the great black Friday deals, I have never done it. Maybe next year I'll come with you!

I don't have any personal experience but can help you if you have any questions! The carb counting and stuff can be pretty confusing. Let me know if I can help!

That really sucks. I am sorry Ashley. I am impressed that you are still making chocolates (or I guess made chocolates) on Wed. Good for you to have that self control. I, on the other hand, do not and that is why I am a big FATTY! Good luck with these last few months.... and a happy birthday really soon. Are you in Logan right now? Brad says your sister is here so I assumed you will be gone for a bit.

I feel your pain! I had it with the last 2 and was told to pretty much expect it with this one, but I got the best news and passed, although I still have some of the signs, so I have to be careful... anyways, as far as drinking anything pretty much water and diet soda is all, cause even milk has a lot of carbs. I seem to remember eating lots of chicken... I hope it all goes well, I'll just say it makes all those yummy things even better the moment you diliver and can indulge!
